Blog

I write code, this blog is a dream.

2013.02.11February only have 28 days?

A little update on Proselytizer this morning to make the game more enjoyable.

I also refreshed the "promotional" video:

I didn't have the time to fix all the issues reported by the testers but I will try to improve everything, one thing at a time, during the following months.

Anyway, a huge thank you to all those who took the time to test the game and send me their feedback.

Creating and publishing a game in a month might look like a mad bet but I can assure you that the experience really worth it.

And now it's time to work on my February game. There's only 17 days left in the really short month!

2013.02.04Google Wallet rules

If your entity is based in France, Paypal for digital goods requires an administrative approval, people need to be contacted, time is lost and information is scarce.

Google checkout do not accept merchant from other countries than US and UK.

Thanks God, I finally found a solution with Google Wallet. Easy to setup since I already had a working merchant account from Google Play store. It just works, no need to contact anybody or to lose time. It was made for me!

It means that I finally have a working payment solution for Proselytizer and that I can now spend time improving the game instead of fighting windmills.

Thank you Google, I am still waiting for your reply Paypal!

2013.01.31So what?

So the last ten days were the worst of my life…

The development of Proselytizer was cool but it looked like the entire world conspired to make me fail to ship (really).

So?

So the world lost and I won. I forced its fucking nose in its wee-wee, told it to shut up while I worked and axed my administrative life away so you can play the open beta of Proselytizer!

Some warnings:

  • The game and its website where made in less than a month so I had to cut things. Graphics are really "pure" and it smells like a fresh indie game full of bugs.
  • The game is not fully balanced, I am the only one who played it before the opening.
  • It is not possible to buy extra travels because Paypal have some problem activating Digital Goods on my account. I am still waiting for the fix and I'll work on an alternative tomorrow.
  • Since I had not a lot of time I installed the game on a small and cheap server, it may bug at the first occasion too.

If everything goes as planed will improve it during the following months.

Here's the link to my little new game: http://proselytizer.labe.me.

I hope you will enjoy it!

2013.01.19What I am trying to do with Proselytizer ?

Proselytizer is slowly advancing towards its release and I still hope to finish it's first version for the end of January. Since I already showed some images of the game, I will try to describe it better in this post.

The game will mix strategy and Shoot'em-up.

You are a priest from the Proselytizers' Order. Your mission is to help mankind colonize new planets to spread your religion. Of course aliens must convert or die.

You are freshly debarked on a new world. The routine until some events shake the humdrum.

Concretely, you have access to a map of the current zone.

It contains natives' positions and their numbers. You will have to move your settlers to conquer new outspots.

It's not Galcon, each attack is preceded by a Shoot'em-up travel.

You escorts the settlers and if you suck at the Shoot'em-up some of them will die and the attack may fail. This part also bonuses to upgrade your ship and some things.

The game is quite experimental and the version I try to ship this month will contain only the bare minimum.

Depending on the success of this version, I'll either work to turn the game into something more ambitious and complete or leave the project as is and jump on the next funny idea I have in stock.

The first version will have: bases of the strategic module, one or two maps (zones), the Sheet'em-up with some cubic monsters, cubic bosses and cubic landscape, simple upgrades for the default ship and settlers. I still don't know if aliens will have an AI to lead attacks on the strategic map. It would probably be more interesting but I have so many things to do!

Finally, maps con be scripted which allow some little surprises…

That's the hopefully enticing menu. I do my best so the realization won't disappoint too much despite the time constraint :)

Cheers, Laurent.

Here's what a zone map looks like today:

I also have a more furnished shop now:

Tomorrow I'll get back to the shooting part, I need to code more foes and a level generator!
